These past six months have been quite eventful and a great time to meet people in the mesothelioma community. We had a busy April and May. On April 30th we hosted a reception at the Dana Point Yacht Club in Dana Point. The following day, on May 1st we had hundreds of people participate in the "Breakaway from Cancer Walk" with mesothelioma survivors and other cancer survivors in a celebration of life. On May 21st, we held a first of its kind, international symposium on malignant pleural mesothelioma with some outstanding results.

Community Forum
Our new community form is now up and running. If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma and you have some questions, or you want to share your experiences with others in the community, you can now participate in our Community Forum. Click here to log in and ask questions of our Nurse Practitioner Anne Rorie, or speak to others in the community.

Physicians Attending International Symposium Unanimously Conclude that Patients with Malignant Mesothelioma No Longer Should be subjected to Radical Lung-Removing Surgery (EPP)
On Saturday, May 21st, The Pacific Meso Center (PMC) at Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) held its first International Symposium in conjunction with UCLA at the Sheraton Delfina, Santa Monica. We invited a distinguished group of speakers, including two prominent surgeons from the United Kingdom, Mr. Tom Treasure, MD and Mr. David Waller, MD.

Our group of international mesothelioma experts reviewed information from a variety of U.S. centers as well as from the recently concluded Mesothelioma And Radical Surgery (MARS) trial in the UK. English surgeons, Mr. Tom Treasure and Mr. David Waller clearly demonstrated that radical removal of the lung, extrapleural pneunonectomy or EPP holds no advantage over alternative less radical, lung-sparing therapies currently offered in other centers. AMGEN's Breakaway From Cancer Event Raises $50,000
The Dana Point Cycling Community Foundation in conjunction with Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer initiative hosted a successful fundraiser at the Dana Point Yacht Club on Saturday, April 30th. Over 350 guests attended an evening of food, wine, beer, entertainment and a fabulous silent auction with many prestigious items up for bid. We were very pleased to see many of our patient survivors at the fundraiser.

The following day, on Sunday, May 1st, the Dana Point Cycling Community Foundation held its 5th Annual Dana Point Grand Prix. Crowds estimated at between 10,000 and 12,000 lined the streets of Dana Point's town center and historic Santa Clara neighborhood to witness the Annual Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling. Whether toddlers with training wheels or elite nationally-ranked professionals were on the course, the spectators went wild as competitors whizzed past. It was a very exciting day for all. Nena Neissen: Cooking for Cancer
Nena Niessen is a breast cancer survivor who lives in Newport Beach, California and teaches classes on healthy eating at her studio in her home. Her classes cover a mixture of cancer-related nutrition topics and illustrate how to prepare several meals containing antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber foods and healthy diary alternatives
In Nena's classes, one will learn about the right food choices that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as overcome the disease after it has been diagnosed. Please visit her site at www.curesfromthekitchen.net

September 25, 2011: Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens
Pacific Meso Center at PHLBI will be hosting a luncheon for mesotheliomia survivors and their families, and families of past mesothelioma victims at the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens
Those in attendance will get the opportunity to hear an update on Dr. Robert Cameron's research. They will also get the chance to meet his staff and enjoy fabulous food and drink in a beautiful peaceful, garden setting.

This is the 5th year that Noella Belvedere has hosted a fundraiser at her restaurant in memory of her beloved husband, Ottavio who died from mesothelioma in 2006. Noella has raised a staggering $76,428 for us so far. Her goal is to reach $100,000. Proceeds from the dinner will be donated to The Pacific Meso Center.
