West LA VA Finally Acknowledges the Comprehensive Mesothelioma Treatment and Research Center

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5, 2015 — The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (PHLBI) is excited to announce that the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs website has been updated with information about the Comprehensive Mesothelioma Treatment and Research Center. The addition of the Center’s resources to the website will help Veterans stricken with mesothelioma find the care that they need to fight the disease.

Although the addition seems small, it is a huge step forward. Since 1998, the West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center (West LA VAMC)has worked with the UCLA Medical School to treat mesothelioma in Veterans; however, the VA did not promote the program—making it difficult for Veterans with mesothelioma to find treatment. Now, thanks to a tenacious effort by the John Johnson family, a Marine Infantryman who lost his battle with mesothelioma in 2012, and the PMC, the West LA VAMC has finally acknowledged the program.

There’s still work to be done! Although the VA has acknowledged the program, the Comprehensive Mesothelioma Treatment and Research Center still needs funding. The PMC is asking the VA for funding to help Veterans stricken with service-connected mesothelioma. Sign the petition here.
