Enroll Now in The Celebrex Clinical Trial

Hosted by Dr. Jennifer Mao and
The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute

Until summer 2007, Dr. Jennifer Mao will host a clinical trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. This trial is designed to evaluate the effects of Celecoxib (Celebrex) in preventing lung cancer in high-risk former smokers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already approved Celebrex as treatment for arthritis and other inflammatory diseases as well as a preventive treatment for patients at particularly high risk of developing colon cancer. UCLA has investigated Celebrex since the mid-1990s and these investigations suggest the drug may also prevent lung cancer.

Pre-clinical findings show that Celebrex can prevent lung cancer growth in test tubes and in mice. Celebrex is administered into precancerous lesions where it prevents new blood vessel formation. Preventing blood vessel formation eliminates the blood flow to tumor cells. This causes the cells to die and also prevents the body from developing immunity to the tumor. This process thereby inhibits cancer growth.

Dr. Jennifer Mao and her team will enroll a critical mass of new participants in this study until June 2007. A critical mass of participants includes 30 – 100 participants who meet the study’s eligibility requirements. PHLBI and it’s division, The Punch Worthington Research Lab, joins the study by recruiting participants who meet the minimum requirements and who also have known asbestos exposure.

Celebrex Study Design

Eligibility Requirements: Participants must first meet all the requirements for either A or B.

A
B
Age:  45 years or older. Age:  18 years or older.
Smoking History: Former heavy smoker who quit at least one year ago. Smoking History: Former smoker who quit at least one year ago.

Participants who meet the requirements under A or B MAY qualify for this important study on cancer prevention using Celebrex.

What to Expect From the Study:

Spirometry (to measure lung function)

12-lead EKG

Low-dose helical CT Scan (CAT Scan) of the chest

LIFE (Fluorescence Bronchoscopy)

2. Up to 14 visits to UCLA for a period of up to 5 years.

3. Up to $625 in compensation.

4. All qualified participants will receive six (6) months of Celebrex and six (6) months of a placebo.
