Michael Arlen

Board Secretary

Michael is an entrepreneur with extensive experience in both business and serving on non-profit boards. He launched a local Los Angeles ad agency which, over the course of 16 years, grew into one of Los Angeles’ top billing ad agencies with offices in, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore & Mexico City. He also helped design and popularize the NIH’s emergency medical protocols for the treatment of heart attacks for adults, children and neonates; and asthma guidelines. His pocket references helped usher-in triage-centric education in medical schools and provided coursework for allied healthcare professionals to become certified to deliver emergency care, including the administration of drugs, at the scene, before a patient was able to see a doctor. His latest company, NEWtritious developed functional foods, designed to make it easier for patients in healthcare facilities to receive their Daily Value of protein, essential vitamins and minerals.

Michael earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology at UCLA. He has served on the Boards of the American Lung Association for 12 years and Breathe LA for 14 years.

Kris Fair

Board Director

Kris Fair is a Vice President of Marketing in the Lifesciences category. She plays an integral role leading the marketing team at Generate Life Sciences,(acquired by Cooper Surgical in 2021) that helps to grow and protect families through reproductive, newborn stem cell, genetic screening, medical device, and healthcare technology services. Prior to joining her company, Kris served four years as the West Coast Vice President/General Manager at Cheetah Digital (previously Experian). Kris has extensive experience as a brand and digital marketing executive with expertise in creating and executing customer-centric revenue-driving strategies.

Kris is at a point in her life where she wants to make more of an impact by serving on a nonprofit board. PHLBI’s work ties well into her career in Lifesciences. Kris’s interest in the PHLBI also stems from her family being affected by both cancer and heart disease and she can appreciate the organization’s efforts in these areas. Research is important to her, as well as the articulation of information learned from research being shared outwardly to educate the public. Kris looks forward to working with the Institute, supporting its strategic goals, and adding value through contribution of her marketing expertise in storytelling, branding and messaging.

Douglas Gamble

Board Director

Douglas Gamble is the International Vice President of the Western States Conference of the Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers International Union (formerly referred to as the Asbestos Workers union). His father started working as an asbestos worker in October 1941 in the naval shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Douglas first worked in the asbestos worker trade in June 1968 as a helper. He has personal experience with asbestos exposure, having lost both his father to mesothelioma in 1980 and his brother-in-law in 1996. Many of his co-workers and friends have faced mesothelioma with courage and a will to fight for their life. He is totally committed to assisting in any way possible to raise awareness, increase research and making the latest treatment options accessible to those affected by mesothelioma.

N. Dann Moss

Board Director

N. Dann Moss is an experienced producer, attorney, and personal manager. He spent over forty years as an entertainment attorney specializing in intellectual property; motion picture, television, recording and licensing agreements. He served as the former CEO & General Counsel for Frette Inc, a luxury goods company. Dann returned to the entertainment industry and opened his own practice under, The Dann Moss Group, LLC in 2007. Presently, he serves as Managing Director at The Carpe Diem Group, LLC which specializes in production and talent management.

Dann received his undergraduate degree from The University of Southern California, Cum Laude in Political Science, and his Juris Doctorate from The LaVerne College of Law. He is an active member of the State Bar California; past member for 20 years of the Board of Directors of the Entertainment Industries Foundation; Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation; Co-Founder and Designated Media Patron of the United States Centennial of Flight funded by the US Congress. In addition, he is proud of having produced many live events including Israel’s 70th Anniversary Gala.

Yulia Murzaeva

Board Director

Yulia Murzaeva has more than 10 years of public accounting experience providing audit, accounting and internal controls consulting services to clients. She is a Managing Director for GHJ’s Nonprofit Practice. As part of her focus on nonprofit organizations, Yulia leads GHJ’s annual Nonprofit and Single Audit annual technical trainings, including the FQHC niche training. In addition, she obtained a Not-for-Profit Certificate II from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Furthermore, Yulia previously volunteered her time providing financial analysis for grant applications for Women Helping Youth, an organization of women who have come together to improve the lives of underserved youth in Los Angeles through thoughtful, targeted, collective giving.

Yulia graduated from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

Warren Shulman

Board Treasurer

Warren Shulman is the President and Co-Owner of Valley Salt Cave based in Los Angeles, California. He has over 30 years of accounting, audit, and consulting experience. During this time, he served clients in a variety of industries including consumer products, retail, manufacturing and distribution, waste hauling and real estate.

Warren was an audit and consulting partner at Green Hasson Janks LLP, a position he held for seventeen years. Warren is a member of the AICPA and the California Society of CPA’s, the Salt Therapy Association and the International Franchise Association.

In addition to his professional success Warren also serves as the Audit Committee Chair and Treasurer for the Immigration Center for Women and Children.

Warren graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with an Honors Degree in Finance and a postgraduate diploma in accounting.

Sam D. Schwartz

Financial Advisor & Counsel

Sam D. Schwartz has extensive experience in investment banking, corporate finance, strategic investments, and risk arbitrage. He founded Kaliber Management Corporation (KMC) a registered investment counseling firm. He was also portfolio manager for several substantial entrepreneurs including an NFL team owner, the largest world-wide fast-food restaurant and others where preservation of capital is uppermost. Among the many developmental accomplishments, was the establishment of converting a regional not for profit HMO to one of the most prominent and is one of the largest for-profit HMO public companies in the world. He also was CEO of one of the first vertical internet specific industry related companies that because of its’ success, later became a student case study at Harvard Business School.

He was nominated as Entrepreneur of the Year in 1995 by Merrill Lynch and Ernst & Young.

Sam has also served on the founding advisory board of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. He was among the first professional investment managers to utilize option strategies as a methodology in managing risk adverse capital. He is widely recognized for his expertise in this area and was frequently quoted in Barron’s Financial Magazine, Business Week, and featured in various other financial publications such as Institutional Investor, Inc Magazine, and the Wall Street Transcript.

In addition, Sam was an instrumental part of PMC’s Virtual Walk for Mesothelioma’s unprecedented success in October 2020, helping to raise over $528,000 for mesothelioma research. A mesothelioma survivor, and forever thankful to Dr, Cameron and his team and staff, he generously challenged Walk for Meso donors by offering to match their contributions, resulting in a personal donation of $150,000 and a total amount raised of $177,000, making his team, Fans of Sam, the Top Fundraising Team.

Most of all, Sam is committed to helping the Institute to fund and find a cure for Mesothelioma.

Dr. Walid Sabbagh

Grant and Patent Advisor

Dr. Walid Sabbagh’s is the Vice President of Business Development at Southern California Biomedical Council where his goals are to advance the greater Los Angeles’ region life technology ecosystem by facilitating access to talent, capital, partnerships, and service providers.

Dr. Sabbagh received his BS from UCSD, PhD from the UCI, and is also a registered United States Patent Agent. Dr. Sabbagh has immense experience in every aspect of research and business development and has extensive experience and relationships with local biotechnology firms, universities, and medical centers. Dr. Sabbagh has extensive direct experience with the biotech startup process and its development process. Dr. Sabbagh is also an expert in grants, grant development, and grant management and has consulted and facilitated the successful submission of many NIH grants, and has authored many high impact scientific publications.
